ronfiwonn At one time a mere scrapbook, today's college annual has come a long way since its birth in 1880. In the United States today, the yearbook industry is big business, with al- most Z,000 colleges and universities publishing a book an- nually. The staffs of each of these publications attempt to produce a book which is unique and imaginative. It is the desire of every editor to break the bonds of tradition and publish an individual, outstanding record in a relatively brief span of pages and limited budget. As a representative of the entire college community, however, a broad, honest, un- biased interpretation of the year's events is required. Thus, to accurately represent a school, the college annual does, of necessity, include numerous traditional features. There still remains, within these customary boundaries, a Wide range open to creative interpretation. lt is this characteristic which gives each yearbook a personality of its own. lVe believe there is a purpose behind every object and every thing . . . a reason for being and doing. It is our attempt to explain these purposes, in pictures and copy, which personifies this, the 196-1 edition of the OLD GOLD. 'ti ll
