MAUCKER'S MESSAGE ADMINISTRATION As we celebrate seventy-five years of service to tin State of Iowa, it is a pleasure to reeall the growth of this college from that day in the fall of 1S76 when four instructors and twenty-seven students came together for the first time in a three-story brick building, originally used to house orphans and Civil War soldiers, to hold the classes in the new Iowa State Normal School. The citizens of the State of Iowa have had sufficient faith in public education and in the desira- bility of providing a relatively large single-purpose insti- tution devoted solely to tin preparation of public school personnel, to build a 250-acre campus with thirty major buildings and a total staff of approximately 650 persons including 330 of academic rank. Students and parents have res|M nded in like measure so that we now have an enroll- ment of 2300 college students and 700 campus laboratory students on this site. The most recent step in the development of the college will become a reality when the first students enroll for graduate work in June of 1052. Thus the college moves forward to meet new challenges in the professional educa- tion of teachers. As I mentioned in the matriculation convocation last September, we are obligated, in my judgment, to strive to make ourselves a “dedicated community , in the best sense of Mr. Hutchiii' phrase, dedicated to the service of society through the improvement of one of its basic social institu- tions the public school. It is my belief that our most im- portant single task is to develop a unity of spirit, a unify- ing sense of mission—and that the unifying concept for ns lies in recognition of a fundamental obligation to support, interpret and assist in the improvement of. the American system of free public schools. 15
