These three aspects of our work appear in each course, the differentiation of courses depend- ing upon which part of the general aim receives chief emphasis. One of these aims is the development of personality and culture through study of the writings of noted authors. Another is improvement in the power of self-expression, whether written or spoken. A reciprocal relationship exists in these phases of our work. One can not express thought and feeling impressively until he has attained suilicient development of mind and heart to demand force and beauty of style. On the other hand, practice in expressing noble thought increases ability to think on high levels. Motivatiiig these two aims is the distinctive purpose of the college, namely, to prepare teachers. Never out of mind is the thought that it is our primary duty so to instruct and train our students that they will be worthy exemplars for the children whom they will teach and that one of the chief qualifications of a teacher is the ability to express in good English thoughts that spring from a strong, beautiful character. At that time there were Hye instructors, now there are nine during the regular year and about sixteen during the summer term which has come to be one of the most important quarters of the year. This expansion of the teaching staff has permitted, the offeringof a greater number of courses and much more extensive work. - The aim of the department is twofold: first, to give those who are majoring in a certain field of natural science, preparation which will enable them to teach their chosen subjects acceptably in Iowa schoolsg second, to give the many who are able to take only one or two classes in science, a deeper knowledge of and a greater interest in the world about them. , , Page Tfwrnly .refvfrz

DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC Zechiel, Platner, Schmidt, Frampton, Childs Gahlbeck, Hayes, Fullerton CI-Ieadj, Doolittle The Department of Music in the Teachers College is conducted with two distinct aims in view: One is to fur- nish the finest musical training for the most musical stu- dents, the other to use to the highest possible limit all opportunities to level up the musical appreciation and the musical power of the mass of students. This policy has been practiced in the College and in extension work and recommended for general use in the state. H Theaim of the department, to do creditable work in music before asking for credit for music Work, has re- sulted in a steady development and furnished a demon- stration of safe procedure for public schools. To give to school music Work the benefit of the best educational thought and practice of the time Without say- ing too much about the principles underlying it all, has been a constant purpose in the department. The development of musical power by using, generally, music itself as a means rather than by using wearisome exercises has led the way in the pioneer work that the department has done in Standardization Tests and llfleasurements in lVIusic by means of the phonograph. i w X 1 I Q Q, I li: l , , ill i, l l i, .xii R ii ip , ' in i : i . y :Ml 1 Ili I ll l illll A J , , i ,r, 3 llli ' ,lu i :fill ill it will ,5 lil. if lllii if iii 3 lvl Ml' i i will i :il 'L if l ui I illlf li ,Milt QM' 3 All li W1 ii W, Si W N ,i my 1 l1 bill!
