S., Kansas State Agricultural College The Home Economics Department aims to prepare teachers for High Schools in the State, also teachers for the Smith-Hughes work. The Department cooperates in doing extension work in giving cor- respondence courses, and in answering the many requests that come in for suggested text-books and' courses of study from the teachers in the State. The practice cottage furnishes an opportunity for real home manage- mentg also provides a general meeting house for social class gatherings. The Home Economics apartments furnish an ideal place to entertain faculty at luncheon, afternoon teas, and dinner, giving students experi- ence in social affairs without expense to the department, each invited guest being taxed a share of the entertainment. The model baby Homie Con resides in the model apartment and is frequently on exhibition as well as serving as a model for class work in child care. COLE, Graduate Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, N. Y. lVIanual Arts was first introduced into the public schools of Iowa about thirty years ago. For a number of years its development was very slow and the work was confined to a few of the larger cities of the State. In recent years the work has spread very rapidly and has become so prominent that at the present time no school system is considered to be doing all it can for the pupils enrolled unless manual arts, in some of its forms, is given a place in the work of the school. The Department of Mantlal Arts of this institution has for its func- tion the. training of teachers for this special Work. This includes the training of special manual arts teachers, the instruction 'of primary and elementary school teachers so that they may be qualified to use this work in the grades in which they are teaching and also the preparation of per- sons to teach this subject in combination with other subjects in the high schools. At the present time the enrollment in the department is larger than it has been for a number of years. Forty-eight young men are enrolled on the two-year course leading to the special manual arts diploma and eight have chosen to major in manual arts on the Bachelor of Arts degree. Thus the outlook for th-e department being of large service to the teach- ers of the State is probably more promising than at any other time since its organization. - Paye T wi nly fue

A., Bowdoin College In nineteenhundred and thirteen all of the natural science Work of the school was united into one department. At that time there were Hye instructors, now there are nine during the regular year and about sixteen during the summer term which has come to be one of the most important quarters of the year. This expansion of the teaching staff has permitted, the offeringof a greater number of courses and much more extensive work. - The aim of the department is twofold: first, to give those who are majoring in a certain field of natural science, preparation which will enable them to teach their chosen subjects acceptably in Iowa schoolsg second, to give the many who are able to take only one or two classes in science, a deeper knowledge of and a greater interest in the world about them. , , Page Tfwrnly .refvfrz
