In- cluding 4,649 newly orientated freshmen. registrants sam- pled a new procedure that transposed languages and math department tables from the steamy Reference Room to downstairs areas. But in spite of the comparative sophistication. the change did little to lessen the traditionally mad press for classes. Departments continued the discouraging habit of closing classes with anxious students still in line, and the few chairs available were full of harrassed students erasing schedules. Some still had time for a change.
