through months of Of Q r classes and T' Whirling Im study, an end- less array of 4 events dot a student's cal- endar with bright spots of green tradition. Athletic events, dramatic productions, Homecoming celebration, Uni- versity Day speeches and awards, elections, torch marches, fraternity parties and pin- nings-each is treasured for its particular impression, meaning and color. Underlying the activities, the suitcase campus controversy appears. To migrate home or not to go on weekends is the issue. And yet, a nucleus of students savors the bittersweet events which compose the tradi- tion and school spirit of the university. With controversy raging as to whether the students should go or stay at week's end, the question arises: Why stay? What is there to do? The unspoken cry is: Keep us here. We want to stay. The discussion fills the year. And each year, those who want to stay find their own activity . . . their own pastimes . . . their own niche in this strange world of almost reaching maturity but not quite. Another controversy sometimes takes pre- cedence. It concerns why students are at North Texas-to study or socialize. One side is compelled to activate a dead past of road trips, pep rallies and football weekends. Where's that good old school spirit, they askg where's our glory to the greenn? The other faction argues a degree is the thing, good old degree-it's a symbol now of busi- ness investment and prestige. Study, study, study, study, they insist, forget those useless activities, they just take up precious time. And down on fraternity row 1 which really isn't a row at alll the Greeks perpetuate the school spirit image of North Texas by their participation in all phases of campus life. Independents argue the Greeks wouldn't be interested if it weren't for fraternal ties. Greeks believe they wouldn't be Greeks if they werenlt interested in the university. And thus the battle cries sound. Elections become a war of Independents and Greeks. Homecoming becomes a carnival of money spent, personalities and organizations match- ed, poor old school spirit and tradition parodied. Yet somehow there is activity-a thread of tradition tangled up in the muddle. Some- how the students-those who want to have -have the time of their lives. -..,...a-..-:.1-v- ,,- Z-
