Cafford was named Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in Novem- ber, a post vacated by Dr. B. B. Harris. Before his appointment as Dean, Dr. Cafford was head of the History Department, a position which he still holds. After receiving his degrees from the Uni- versity of Texas, he taught at the University of Mississippi and the College of Charleston, S. C. In l9-18 he received a Carnegie research grant to study Anglo-Russian imperialism in the Near and Middle East. and in 1942 he was listed in the Directory of American Scho- lars. In addition to his double duties, Dr. Cafforcf always has time to listen to students' never ending tales of woe. Few of them graduate from the College of Arts and Scien- ces witfiout entering his office for a confer- ence on academic problems and graduation schedules. Friendly Dr. Gafford takes much of his valuable time to assist them personally. Tae Dean follows carefully the primary purposes of the College of Arts and Sciences, which are to provide the intellectual discip- line and cultural experiences that are essen- tial to a liberal education.
