3 fx ci 459' gs A spy vw wxvgw, .V James C. Mattlleuvs Dr. C. Matthews is the first alumnus to become president of North Texas State College, assuming the presidency March 4, 1952. Despite a busy schedule, the College president is not out of the students' reach. He has a real and personal interest in them as individuals. Dr. Matthews counsels with students and advises them in regard to their projects and activities. Many an idea has become a worthwhile reality through the farsightedness and cooperation of the president. He is known over the nation for his educational work. Before coming to North Texas, he was the Deputy State Supervisor of Education. His first years at North Texas, which gave him a storage of valuable experience, were spent as Director of Teacher Training and Director of the Education Department. Upon reorganization of the College, he became the first Dean of the School of Education. He was later appointed North Texas' first vice-president, serving with President McConnell. YV. Joseph McConnell Presidenf-Emerifus A genial new occupant moved into the vice-presidents office in the Administra- tion Building this year. Dr. A. M. Samp- ley took over the post vacated when Dr. C. Matthews became president of North Texas. Dr. Sampley has been on the College faculty since lU35. serving as Director of Libraries and head of the Library Serv- ice Department. For two of his years as a faculty mem- ber, he was honored as Poet Laureate of Texas. YVith the vice-presidency. Dr. Sampley took over most of the duties of the Dean of .-Xdministration and is responsible for the academic matters of the College in general. He attended the University of Texas and Columbia University. Before coming to North Texas. he taught at the Univers- ity of Texas. Louisiana State Normal Col- lege, and Sul Ross College. serving there as head of the English Department. From his life-time advisory position as President Emeritus of North Texas State College. Dr. YV. McConnell envisions even greater advances for the college than were made during his term as president of the College. North Texas became the largest state- supported teacher's college in the nation during his presidency. It was also reor- ganized into one College and five Schools. Dr. McConnell is a familiar figure to the North Texas students. His friendli- ness places him high in the hearts of his fellow workers and the students. He studied at North Texas for a time and attended the University of Denver and Columbia University to do his graduate work. The rungs of his ladder to the presi- dency of North Texas include: associate professor of mathematics. Associate Dean. head of the Economics Department, and Dean of the College. Arthur M. far S it lVll.l.I.-XM CL. YVOODS is North Texas' vibrant Dean ol' Men. He gives the men of the college understanding counseling in the fields ol' academics, finance. housing. and discipline. Besides these duties as Dean, he assists with the College social program and acts as advisor for the fraternities on the campus. His carelul direction has brought the best national fraternities to the North Texas campus. He received degrees from North Texas and Southern Methodist University and returned to North Texas as a faculty member in l937. He be- came Dean of Men in February. 1948. DR. JACK JOHNSON serves the college doubly as the Dean of the Graduate School and the Director of the Department of Economics and Sociology. Fears and worries of students entering the Grad- uate School are alleviated by Dr. -Iohnson's exper- ienced counseling. He also takes his place in the classroom as professor of economics. He received his B.S., M.A.. and Ph.D., from the University of Texas. Most of the North Texas students know him as Dr. Jack-a pet name for a man who is a real friend to the students. DR. .IMOGENE BENTLEY is a personal lriencl to all the women students olf North Texas. Through her friendly counseling and suggestions, problems of employment, dating, and personal difficulties can be solved. As if coping with the problems of the North Texas females were llOt enough, Dean Bentley teaches in the English Department and is in fre- quent demand in this area as a lecturer. In her advisory capacity with social sororities, she has been instrumental in helping to establish top-rating national sororities on campus. North Texas girls owe her a vote of thanks for her contributions toward a satisfying college life and lor performing her duties as an educator rather than as a formal disciplinarian.
