THIS XVAS THE YEAR that both dire cynicism and idealistic optimism met in an atom-like fusion before the stark and bitter reality of fact. It was a time for positive action to support our challenged faith in democratic life and liberties. THE CAMPUS COMPLEXION CHANGED as many of our younger men laid aside their studies and stepped from the gay collegiate life into an atmosphere of determi- nation. and death. No longer could we speak lightly of a Cold YVar - it was hot, as hot as the blood of our men that was spilled. THE HAND OF DESTINY PUINTED to this year and marked it for special significance. NVar intervened while North Texans wondered if this was our peak year. Many believed that this was true. Yticzefx editors believed that if this was to be so, then the 1951 YUCCA should reflect the year accurately. This edition then. in its peak of 520 pages. is symbolic - symbolic of our best effort. campus- wide. in all areas of school life - from fine arts attendance to intramural participation. Our theme for this dynamic period is in itself dynamic. lVhile striving to portray the tradition- al. from the schools inception at the turn of the century, the technique has been as fresh and modern as the next sunrise. as yet unborn. Two years later Mitchell Preston Wells came to North Texas State College. Quite active in his chosen field ol' English, he became well- known and loved for his gentle suthen drawl. brilliant sense of humor. and pierc- ing intelligence. He awakened in many students a desire lor learning after his scholarly manner which remains since his passing from our campus scene. IN THE SPRING of l9-13 he became the chairman of the Publications Council. Tre- mendous progress was his greatest contri- bution to publications at North Texas. Continually striving for more generous budgets, Dr. VVells saw student editions garner the amazing total ol' 26 All-Amerr can ratings fNational Scholastic Press As- sociationj and all nine of the first place trophies of the Texas Inter-Collegiate Press Association during his seven years as chairman of Publications. AS STUDENT EDITORS contemplate new innovations and advancements. they exemplify the living monument of journal- istic creation that is the result of his en- deavor, with enlightened administrative support, for student publications.
