0 l To fhe Fafher of Teachers College Publicafions Right in the path that Grant's destructive army cut through Alabam', in Marshall County, a scant mile from the Tennessee River, Wallace Newton Masters was born. His Hrst memories are of picking up Minnie balls and spent shells around the place. We came to Texas in '79, Mr. Masters recalls. W. N. Masters was principal of the Denton High School for ten years and in the Dallas schools for two years before coming to take over the chemistry department of this college in IQIO. The following year he was named financial adviser for the college publications and suc- ceeded in pulling publication finances out of the red. About 1918 when the Publications Coun- cil was organized, he became the first director. The mark of Mr. Master's'work in Teachers College publications has assumed perman- ency, for it was he who christened the Campus Chat and the Ave-rm, the latter from a Hindu expression meaning the living word. He remained chairman of the Publications Council until his retirement last September. Since then, Mr. Masters has had more time for his major interests, banking and farm- ing. He is not in literal retirement, for he is now part-time active president of the First State Bank, and spends a part of each day there. A charter stockholder in the bank when it was organized, he has been president for six years. Whois Who lists W. N. Masters as a breeder of Iersey cattle, and he proudly lays claim to the ownership of the oldest Iersey herd in Denton County. Nearly every day he finds time to visit his farm. For a long time superintendent of the local Methodist Sunday School, Mr. Masters has also served a turn in every oH'ice of his chapter of the Masonic Lodge. The W. N. Masters Chemical Society is a living tribute to his work in this college. W. N. Masters gave more than thirty years of service to Teachers College publications. He guided their first steps forward, saw them through their growing pains, and, in a greater degree than any other individual, has been behind their progress. To him this book is gratefully dedicated.
