Lois BENNETT KNOX, B. S. I am Thoth, Lord of the Halls of Books, the perfect scribe whose hands are pure, who writes down justice, and who hates every wrong, whose words, being written, are immortal and have dominion over two earths. I re- fresh memory by recorded words. I reveal and interpret all things. I am Lord of all learning, numbering, and measuring, the founder of all sciences. I weigh and re- cord the deeds of men. I drive away enmity and dispel quarrels. Your Halls of Books are full of the wisdom and witchery of the ages. Bring all youth to the portals, large and small, give them the keys, for in the Halls of Books or by their secrets is fought the great duel between intelligence and ignorance. As librarian, Mrs. McCracken is the administrator of the Halls of Books. PEARL C.. Twenty-live centuries of research have piled high the treasures of the Kingdom of Mathematics and there are yet uncharted realms waiting for the explorer. One who-unafraid-delves into its mysteries has an op- portunity for real study and advancement. EX6CUflVCS 2 . RUTII T. LEIIMAN Director Department of Home Economics Ilepartment of Home Economics RUTII TOWNSEND LEI-IMAN, EDITH LUECKE, M. A. M. A. JESSIE ELIZAEETII ACKER, LoIs ASHLEY PEARMAN, M. A. M. A. REBECCA MAE JoIINsToN, MURIEL E. WILLIAMS, M. A. M. A. Someone has said, I must know fifty-seven trades in order to run my home. The Home Economics Depart- ment does not pretend to offer instruction in all these trades, but it does recognize the fact that home-1nak- ing is far from being simply cooking and sewing, and that teachers of home-making need broad training. The work of the department therefore ranges from the de- velopment of specific techniques to the application of science, art, and economics in the solution of home prob- lems, and finally to the consideration of the very human problems represented by the nursery school, and the study of family relationships. Department of Industrial Education HUGO JOHN PETER VITZ, M. A. SAMUEL ALFRED BLACKB URN, Ph. D. JESSE DARNVIN HAI.I,, JR., B. A. The quality of all civilizations depends upon intelli- gence and character, or morality, in the order stated, for morality springs from intelligence, not intelligence from morality. Nor would it be difficult to prove thatpractical intelligence is more conducive to a high development of morals than upon mere theoretical intelligence. Industrial Education stimulates and quickens the in- tellect by the use of mechanical tools. The skilled hand confers benehts upon man, and each benefit so conferred exerts the natural moral influence of a good act upon the mind of the benefactor. The Work in Industrial Education prepares teachers of power to guide young people in their manual activities so as to develop to the fullest extent those moral, in- tellectual, and social- values so desirable in citizenship. Executives 2 ---ii- LILLIAN M. PARRILL Director Department of Music Department of Music LILLIAN MAY PARRILL, GLADYS TQELSO, B. Mus. B. Mus. MARY ANDERSON, FLOYD GRAHAM, M. Mus. B. Mus. It is said that man has a three-fold nature: physical, intellectual, and spiritual: body, mind, and soul. The body is governed by physical existence, the mind, by thought and reason, the soul, through moods and emotion. Character is developed through moods and thoughts, either God-like or God-less. Music satisfies the deep feelings that stir one while sad or happy. Good music enables one to rise above his every-day self into a realm of pure thought, happiness, sympathy or aspiration, bringing him back better able to perform his work in the world. Department of Physics L. L. MILLER, M. A. SAM PARKER, B. S. The application of the laws of Physics to music, to architecture, and to the construction of machinery makes the study of Physics one of supreme importance to every- one. Since one's concepts are based largely on what he sees, hears, etc., and his judgments determined principal- ly by his interpretations of physical phenomena and laws, the study of Physics is a dominant factor in the develop- ment of a comprehensive-philosophy of life. The super- stitious, hokus-pokus, chance elements are banished from one's thinking. L. L. MILLER Direclor Department of Physics P1120
