Executives A Definitions of education vary as view- points differ. To some education means the development of inherited potentialities. To others it means the adjustment of the in- dividual to his environment. To still others it means guidance hy reason instead of hy impulse. Possibly they are all correct. The older nations are critical of American educational ideals and institutions. As a sort of halo around the heads of you teachers-in-the-mak- ing, I see eager youthful faces lifted up and hands extended toward the light. These phantom children represent real children in whose existence lies the reason for the creation and maintenance of this institution, a teachers college. Your instructors have been chosen andlyour physical surroundings set up with the welfare of these young people in view. In the discharge of his duties, he is in constant contact with both students and members of the faculty. The office furnishes an opportunity to harmonize dis- cordant factors, to share in the joys of achieve- ments, and to offer assistance to those in distress. Problems of every sort and kind come to him. Requests for the impossible as well as the possible must be acted upon.
