aw Wm rf Q ,YL 1 ,- R . if .X 2. S 5' 3 . :J -Q 3 A o u R Q N IFE is that process of non-living matter becoming living matter and living matter becoming non-living matter. So long as the- process continues, life isgiwhen the process ceases, there is no life. Senility is a direct result of the slowing down of the life processes due to deposits of non-living matter within and without the cells, with a consequent solidihcation of the tissues. Solidincation is a part of the vicious cycle which slows down the life processes at an increasing rate until death is the inevitable catastrophe. Such is the message and verdict of science as well as of theology. No matter how final and overwhelming this message and this verdict may appear, man has ever considered them cruel, and he has never quite believed the message, nor has he completely surrendered to the verdict, Man's search for the fountain of youth and immortality remains unchallenged as the oldest of all stories, because he refuses to allow science and theology to say ..,... for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. . Since true living is not to be measured by years but by experiences and contacts, we may by a knowledge of the past span a thousand years in a day. By maintaining vital associations with the current events which encompass the earth man may live much in a brief span. It so happens that the brain cells are the last to slow down and the last tissue that shows symptoms of senility This being true man may grow old physically and at the same time actually grow mentally young An educated man by knowing the past may live that past and reckon it with the present in the sum of his years I beseech you, as educated men and women, that you know the past but that you live in the present Do not allow yourself at any time to move through life walking backward turn your face to the fi ont, welcoming every new day with an open mind for every new thing A tendency to think of new achievements as fads is a dangerous symp tom it is a warning of the slipping of youth Your learning will yield you youth and long life, the ages and the present are yours Love expressed in service for your fellovx man earns an immortal place in the hearts of your friends You can never learn too much noi love too much In the hearts of those Il Let my headstone be Place no gllZ1Z'Ll6 nzonmnent Grcwely over me If I mn forgotten, then Let me he unknown, I care not fo? cnwons eyes Gaazng at a stone I commend learning and love to you Thev are the answers to the quest for youth and immortality R L MARQUIS Page 21 YR 34 2 Q gy 1 la 4 if S 9. ii 1 3, 9 56 y V ! . 91 ' M l ' i I 1 C xg, .
