UND SPORTS . . . Basketball Team Takes North Central Conference Sports events occur in many various forms, each using different equipment, number of participants, and strategies. Almost every type of sport could be enjoyed by men and women athletes and spectators at UND. There are 21 sports events for men and 10 for women. Some sports are designed to make the individual compete alone, he is in a sense a team by himself. He doesn't have a team to back him up. A wrestler can take high honors at tournaments without his team receiv- ing anything. The same thing goes for a cross country runner, tennis player, or swimmer. In a way this is easier for an athlete, because he isn't dependent on his other teammates to carry their weight. On the other hand, it may be more difficult, because the athlete knows there is no one to blame if he should lose. He is the sole performer and must take all the disappointments of defeat as well as all the glory of victory. There are many sports that require more than one person to make up a team. These vary in size, from 11 members on a football squad to 5 on a basketball team. These teams use quite a few complicated plays and their timing must be perfect in order to pull off a victory. The members need to know what their fellow teammates are going to do. This takes a remarkable amount of time, which the athletes gladly give in order to better themselves and their team. The players and their coaches are not the only ones involved in a game. Many times the sports stadiums have been filled to capacity with college kids, cheering on their team. They often become so involved with the game, they actually feel a part of it. Some of the most well attended sports, among the 31 on campus, were football, basketball, hockey, and wrestling. The football team, coached by Jerry Olson, had a season record of 1-7-1. Rube Biorkman led the hockey team to an equal win-loss record of 19-19. The basket- ball team had the best record of the major sports events with a 26-4 record. Dave Gunther, UND basketball coach, led his team to the North Central Conference Title, and AA Division Two Championship. Bob Stiles helped his wrestling team to a 15-6 record in dual meets. Although the womens sports number half as many as the mens, their spirit and enthusiasm is as great. They put forth a huge effort to bring pride to UND. Women athletes have come a long way since the begin- ning of the womens' lib movement and they will probably continue to increase their involvement in sports as years go by. Photo A
