UND ADMINISTRATION . . . . . . Many People Help UND Run Smoothly It takes a lot of co-operation to keep a university the size of UND running smoothly. Responsibility is divided among many peopte. The overseer of all these people is Thomas Clifford, UND President. To help him keep things going are four Vice Presidents: G.M. Skogley, CE. Nelson, L. Swanson, R.H. Brown. These people are involved with financial aid, academic affairs, operations, and student development. Further down the line are the deans of various coHeges within the university, whose concern is for the students moioring in certain fields. All these people plus many more make UND a well organized college. A. President of UND, Thomas Clifford. Photo by S. Augustin. B. Audrey Hiney, Executive Director of Christus Rex. Photo by J. Puuley. Memories of looking past a professor to a ruin-splattered window, through which the rich golden dress of a tree slowly changed to a frosty white and then, to a Iccey green. Days when the light spring breeze beckoned students outside, out of the classroom. The word otso calls to mind the fascination of a stu- dent listening to his teacher bring to life a piece of literature and the pains of an exam, but most of all it brings to mind the excitement of learning. Basketball Team Takes North Central Conference Sports events occur in many various forms, each using different equipment, number of participants, and strategies. Almost every type of sport could be enjoyed by men and women athletes and spectators at UND. There are 21 sports events for men and 10 for women. Some sports are designed to make the individual compete alone, he is in a sense a team by himself. He doesn't have a team to back him up. A wrestler can take high honors at tournaments without his team receiv- ing anything. The same thing goes for a cross country runner, tennis player, or swimmer. In a way this is easier for an athlete, because he isn't dependent on his other teammates to carry their weight. On the other hand, it may be more difficult, because the athlete knows there is no one to blame if he should lose. He is the sole performer and must take all the disappointments of defeat as well as all the glory of victory. There are many sports that require more than one person to make up a team. These vary in size, from 11 members on a football squad to 5 on a basketball team. These teams use quite a few complicated plays and their timing must be perfect in order to pull off a victory. The members need to know what their fellow teammates are going to do. This takes a remarkable amount of time, which the athletes gladly give in order to better themselves and their team. The players and their coaches are not the only ones involved in a game. Many times the sports stadiums have been filled to capacity with college kids, cheering on their team. They often become so involved with the game, they actually feel a part of it. Some of the most well attended sports, among the 31 on campus, were football, basketball, hockey, and wrestling. The football team, coached by Jerry Olson, had a season record of 1-7-1. Rube Biorkman led the hockey team to an equal win-loss record of 19-19. The basket- ball team had the best record of the major sports events with a 26-4 record. Dave Gunther, UND basketball coach, led his team to the North Central Conference Title, and AA Division Two Championship. Bob Stiles helped his wrestling team to a 15-6 record in dual meets. Although the womens sports number half as many as the mens, their spirit and enthusiasm is as great. They put forth a huge effort to bring pride to UND. Women athletes have come a long way since the begin- ning of the womens' lib movement and they will probably continue to increase their involvement in sports as years go by. Photo A Photo B A. Photo C Photo C Photo A iBeIowi Kiss Concert Huge Success iiWhat is there to do? , was a sentence very rarely heard from a UND student, who knew anything at all about UND. Whatever interest a stu- dent may have had, he could almost be certain that there was an organization in which he could become involved in. The list ranged from sports, both collegiate 0nd in- tramural, to music and drama, Greek activities, religious groups and many more. Every college on campus had some kind of organization related to its particular field of study. If 0 student didn't feel like committing himself to anything A. UND ACTIVITIES i there was still always some kind of entertainment planned for the evenings which he could attend. Many times a hard choice had to be made between two or more of them. S.P.O.K.E. Student Program- ming Of Kampus Eventst planned many of the events on campus, one of which, the Kiss concert, was a huge success with cu full house crowd. UND is one of the few colleges in North Dakota in which most of the students don't pack and leave for home Photo C on the weekends, there is always something going on. The University of North Dakota has spread out and acquired many new buildings to accommodate the over nine thousand students that attend the university. The newest building, the Nursing Building, was iust open- ed for use this year. Although many large changes had occurred at UND, the small ones are the most beautiful, the different seasons. Each season brought on a different activity. In the fall when the trees were adorned with reds, yellows and golds, football games and meeting new people were high on the lists of most students. The cold winds of winter brought on snow and study, which was finalty followed by spring and the fever that warm weather brings. A, A UND student finds a quick way to get around in the snow.
