President Merrifield was born at Williamsville, Vt. llc was graduated from Yale in 1877, and taught for the next two years in a private school at Newburg, N. Y. For four years he held a position at Yale as tutor in the classics and niatheniaties. ln 1883 he was appointed to the chair of Latin and Greek in the newly established University of North Dakota.
