Chapel Hill responds to the Uni- versity and ultimately to each of us who is a minute fragment of the Uni- versity, as sensitively and joyfully as any coy maid ever responded to a suiter ' s attention. Stores and restau- rants open and close to the tune of the students ' comings and goings. The town of Chapel Hill is a quali- tatively different, quieter place when the University closes for Christmas or semester break — Townspeople at- tain a prominence otherwise un- known. The trees and ivoried build- ings stand out more markedly against the sky than when they are surround- ed by and filled with the milling thousands of students. The village is a good place when the students are gone, a less frenetic town in which one is more conscious (almost to the point of self -consciousness) of the slow smooth glide of time.
