Our revels now are ended. These our actors As I foretold you, tvere all spirits, and Are melted into air, into thin air; And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-capped towers, the gorgeous palace ' s. The solemn temples, the great globe itself. Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve; And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rock behind. We are such stuff As dreams are made on. and our little life Is rounded with a sleep. The Tempest Four years ago we members of the Class of 1961 severed man- fully our ties with the hearth and strode confidently toward col- lege. We rejoiced in our new-found freedom and called all hail to the gods of higher learning. Driven thus from the comforts of home we arrived at this insti- tution of academic pursuit prepared to embrace warmly its tradi- tions, its institutions and its football team. We were swept into its life and soon became a full and enthusiastic part of the Chapel Hill community. During these four years we have labored diligently at the feet of these gods of learning, played with abandoned reserve and learned not merely to respect our fellow man but to love him. Now, as the last moments flicker to a sorrowful end, we leave the academic world and enter the Great Paths of Life ■ — full, perfect, and sufficient men. The only false note in this story is its lack of realism. We have not learned a great deal, because we have not wanted to. We hove not wholly responded to the classroom challenge. Those resolutions voiced manfully before Mother vanished in a haze of beer, motion pictures, dances and football weekends. We met our requirements; we only did not exceed them. Perhaps we did learn much of ourselves and our fellow man. We, to be sure, did not learn to love him, but we may hove learned to tolerate him. We grew, albeit with hesitation, in that acquired wisdom that comes only through living and being. There have been good moments and bod. There hove been days when all of us must have wondered whether the grind and the frustration and the dissatisfaction were worth it all; and there have been days when on ' A ' or a new-found love have lifted us to happiness and the courage to go on. Through it all we hove emerged to take our place in the Ameri- can scene, passing through Chapel Hill to be forgotten as the next class takes our place. Our revels, indeed, ore ended. Now we wait and move expectantly toward that moment when we realize that, somehow, we grew and flourished. Joiidthdii Ycirdky ' 61
