Y-YACK the briefness and incompleteness of an article of this nature makes it not feasible to expand further than giving a few sentences to each of the other steps contributing to the making of a Greater University. With the rapid expans on of the institution in increased number of students, and the annexat ' on of new branches of work, the year has recorded the erection of three new buildings. The first of these, the Caldwell Hall, has provided sufficient accommodations for the growing medical school. The new dormitory, whose three sections are named after Pres. K. P. Battle, Gov. Zeb B. Vance, and Gen. J. J. Pettigrew, has been com- pleted, and contains quarters for seventy-two students. Then, too, the erection of a new educational building, made possible by the Peabody Fund, will mark the rise of the school of education. The activities of the faculty have set a standard unsurpassed in previous years. This standard was voiced by a younger alumnus in his speech on University Day, when he asserted that there was a prevailing sentiment in the State that the University should, like the University of Wisconsin, spend itself more directly in the service of the people. It is doing this, in solving the problems of public health, in bringing about better methods of taxation, in giving expert advice to townships and counties engaged in the construction of highways, in carrying literature on all kinds of everyday, actual problems to any citizen in the State who might be in need of special information; in doing all those helpful, needful things embraced under the head of intelligent University Extension.
