Entered the preparatory department of East Tennessee University in 1S67, and finished the Freshman year at that institution. Entered with the Freshman Class at Yale in 1S69, graduatino in 1S73. Was a member of Brothers in Unity (one of the two general Societies at Yale), and of the i ' ollowing fraternities : Freshman, Gamma Nu (local) ; Sophomore, Phi Theta Psi (local) ; Junior, Psi Upsilon (chaptered) ; Senior, Skull and Bones. Instructor in Ancient Languages at the Uni ' ersity of Tennessee, 1873-77 ; Professor of Ancient Languages there, 1877-S6 ; Chairman of the Faculty, President State Teachers ' Association of Tennessee, 1885-86. Resigned Professorship to accept the chair of Greek at the University of North Carolina in 1886. Granted leave of absence by the Board of Trustees in 1893 to ser e as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Greece, Roumania, and Ser ' ia. Residence, Athens. Married October 15, 1874, at Knoxxille, Tennessee, Marion Howard Smith. They have two sons and two daughters. In 1893, the Uni ersity of North Carolina conferred upon him the degree of Doctor of Laws.
