Hon. UQttstus an IJtItjck. Augustvis Van Wyck, seventh in descent from Cornelins Barents Van Wj ck, of Wyck, Holland, who came over to this country and settled on Long Island, in 1650, was born in Pendleton, S. C, in 1844. He was prepared for college at Phillips Exeter Academy, and took the degrees of A.B., in 1864, and of A.M., in 1868, from the University of North Carolina, where he was an editor of the Viiiversity Magazine, a member of the Dialectic Literar} ' Society, and of the Upsilon Chapter of the Zeta Psi Fraternity. He married Leila, the daughter of Dr. Wm. W. Wilkins, of Richmond, Va., b} whom he has two children, a son and a daughter. He settled in Brooklyn, N. V., where he first came into political importance as a leader of the reorganization of the Democratic party in that city, in 1880, which practicallj ' carried King ' s Count}- for Cleveland, in 1884. He was repeatedly made Chairman of King ' s County Committee, and a member of the City, State and National Committees and Conventions, being Chairman of some. In 1885 he became Judge of the City Court of Brooklyn, and has made a reputa- tion for sure and unerring decisions. He is on various committees of the L. I. Diocese of the Episcopal Church, and a trustee of the Cathedral at Garden City. He is a most prominent and loyal frater- nity member, having presided over conventions, and has been instrumental in inducing his own and other colleges to reinstate fraternities in their institutions with gratifying results, by his address on the valuable influences of fraternities in college life. He is a member of the Oxford, Lincoln, Brooklyn, Montauk and Constitu- tion Clubs, and of the Zeta Psi Club of New York. 6
