Display of antique nursing and medical memorabilia. .Zim Student Nurses' Established in 1968, the Student Nurses' Associa- tion at UNC-W provided nursing students with a forum for the expression of their needs and ideas and pro- moted active professional involvement in the health care needs of our society. Among their maior activities this year was a Wel- come Tea in the William Randall Library during fall registration given for new nursing students and facul- ly. Governor Scott and Mayor Schwartz proclaimed Student Nurse Week to be November 7-l 3 this year. During the week, members of the association made radio and television appearances. At a special pro- gram, Mrs. Mary Ann Yow was announced as UNC-W Student Nurse of the Year. Mrs. Yow is also State Nurse of the Year. In December, the Student Nurses' Association had a reception at New Hanover Memorial Hospital in honor of the nursing students and faculty of the James Sprunt Institute in Kenansville. On March 24 and 25, the members hosted the North Carolina State Student Nurses' Convention at the Timme Plaza and provided a Social Hour and Fashion Show for the students and registered nurses at the convention. In April, several members went to local public schools and talked to students about planning careers in nursing. On the 22nd, the association hosted a meeting at Wrightsville Beach of the District Student Nurses' Association. i. The Society of Physics Students is an organization that includes the Sigma Pi Sigma, and the Physics Honor Society. lts function is to promote education ac- tivities tor all students interested in physics, award rec- ognition and distinction to students who have achieved high scholarship in physics by electing them to the status of Sigma Pi Sigma membership with the Society. The obiectives of the Society are to encourage and as- sist student physicists to develop the knowledge, com- petence, and enthusiasm and social responsibility lead- ing to the advancement of physics, stimulate interest in advanced study and research in physics, develop friendship among physics students and faculty mem- bers, popularize interest in physics in the general colle- giate public, and recognize the attainment of high scholarship and potential achievement in physics among outstanding students by means of Sigma Pi Sigma membership. The Helium-Neon Laser was constructed by Steve Howard as part of the Honors Program at UNC-W. The Laser cavity was de- signed to study the effects of cavity parameters on laser action. The design permits the use of several gases other than the stan- dard He-Ne mixture.
