■■ ' 95 o C he cJleclgling Class cfiistortj (JJ NE-HUNDRED-SEVEN first-year Fledglings registered in the hall of learning of Wilmington College on September 30, 1948. Ours was a scared flock, most of us unfamiliar with the demands of college life. We flocked together, however, as birds of a kind will do. and elected Virgil A. Creech, President; Martin Rabunsky, Vice-Presi- dent; and Carolyn Williams, Secretary and Treasurer. We chose as our fatherly advisor, Mr. Adrian D. Hurst. Our first college social was held September 21, and all our fine-feathered friends proved themselves as dancers. We dipped our beaks into the ink of inspiration and came up with our first edition of the Seahawk, our school newspaper. Gene Piner. Lillian Carras, Frank Bradley. William Dobo, and Daye Wilkins represented our flock on the staff. Members of our class, Rebecca Near, Adelaide Wilson, Marilyn McCullen, Eleanor B. Doss, and Daye Wilkins, smoothed their plumage and proved to the Student Body that they belonged to the specie of bird that loves to act. Our class was really proud of their performance in Pennywise. Not long after this, the Student Government held a picnic for its members. Those from our class who were elected to serve on the Student Council along with Virgil A. Creech, our President, were Francis Foy, Secretary; Bernard Corbett and Gene Jewell, Class Representatives. Our class was well represented on the basketball team. Our fellow students who served on the team were Bruce Hinson, Harry Coleman, Carl Mason, Tommy Dann, Donald Edwards, Glenn Bass, and Ed Moore Our Christmas party was a huge success. A tree, glowing lights, and our Penguin from the North Pole— Good Old Santa Claus! And surely none of us will ever forget the two skits put on by the Dramatic Club and featuring our own classmates, Adelaide Wilson, Francis Foy, and Robert Scott. Then came exams, or should we say exams came on forever. You know the story of how some of our classmates thought they knew how to fly already, so they just dropped out of our nest a little sooner than the rest of us. Our class, collaborating with the Senior Class, sponsored a College Banquet, which was held at the Famous Club. Our own class-mate, Donald Blake, served as master of ceremonies. The highest moment came when names of those chosen as Superlatives were announced. Those chosen from our class included: Harriet Smith and Tommy 27

of he c led g ling 1950 CLASS HISTORY (Continued) Dann, as most nonchalant; Adelaide Wilson, biggest flirt; Rebecca Near, most mischiev- ous; Lillian Carras, most likely to succeed; Adelaide Wilson and Robert Hodges, most original; Lillian Carras, most dependable; Rebecca Near, biggest baby; Adelaire Wilson and Steve Stephanadis, wittiest. Basketball Letters were awarded to the following boys at the Banquet: Glenn Bass, Harry Coleman, Tommy Dann, Donald Edwards, Bruce Hinson, Carl Mason, and Huck Moore. Coinciding with our College Banquet, the State Legislature meeting in Raleigh took five of our classmates, Adelaide Wilson, John D. Winters. Chris Blossom, Carolyn Wil- liams, and Gene Fales. Our second year at school brought additional Fledglings into our midst, and several of our old friends did not return to the nest. We again flocked together and elected Virgil Creech as our class President. Gene Jewell was elected Vice-President and John Dickens was elected Secretary-Treasurer of the class. Due to unavoidable circumstances, our President and Vice-President withdrew from office and we elected Gordon Blair as our new President and Frederick Sternberger as our new Vice-President. The members of our class who served on the Student Council during our second year were John D. Winters, President; John Dickens, Vice-President; Adelaide Wil- son, Treasurer; Robert Hayes and Jack Moore, Class Representatives. Gordon Blair, Robert Hayes, and Mary Frances Ellers represented our class on the staff of our school paper, The Seahawk; and our class was represented on the An- nual Staff by Claude McAllister, Adelaide Wilson, Harriet Smith, Mary Frances Ellers and Jack Moore. As we Fledglings approach the date of graduation, we are not quite as fearful as when we first entered the nest. As we prepare to leave our nest, we feel that we have truly sprouted our intellectual wings and are prepared scholastically and socially to fly to new horizons and to new goals. Robert Paul Marley, Mary Frances Ellers, Class Historians. 28
