the dorm is primitive tonight with noises, the call and shriek of the native payphone rocking wild in its cradle ringing red against the feet of the bare stampede down the dark throat of halls a boy and a girl in a libra ry making foot-notes of one another ' s looks . . . he loves her purple sweater and her short fingernails and the little crook in the nose she broke at four voices tinkle on faint dishes, silver talks. a girl in a striped jumper whispers low that she will soon be leaving. her friends jerk their heads in sympathy then bend their faces 1 toward a plate where only their silver talks .... two girls coming back from a college weekend giggle rain away up the sidewalk they go towards the dorm on the feet of chuckles

on lonely nights alive with cigarettes and cups indifferent with black coffee we curl in study to pantomime answers to supposed questions and wait for the morning reality of the blue book. night stretches, yawns into the window, sucks the 3 o ' clock wheels of the mail truck into its vacuum .... somewhere a toilet coughs into the stillness of empty halls, and fades away again, a nocturnal reminder that life goes on thought jerks electric on a page filled with blue lines where students poise their pens at the edge of exams. the message on the board sprouts linear and sterile— If you want your grades early leave a postcard
