S T U D E n T Woman ' s College Student Government, unique in a sehool distinguished for it de- mocracy, was our pride. By ineluding eaeh of the twenty-two hundred girls on campus. Stu- dent Government approached a realization of our democratic ideal. The Student Government officers served their apprenticeship last spring after their election. They officially assumed the responsibility of administration during the last mass meeting in May. These new officers faithfully organiz- ed the Pre-School Conference which was scheduled for early September and was at- tended hy Student leaders and active faculty members. In 1947-1948. significant emphasis was placed on the Honor Policy, the Legisla- tive program, and the social activities. The program framed and the policies formulated BETSY BULLUCK., President Betsy Umstead Secretary Belt} Phillips Treasurer Susan omack I ice-President 28

We have been further saddened this year by the passing of five oilier persons who gave generously of their teaching and friendship to thousands of girls for many years. Some of these five leaders were pioneers in the development of this college ; all of them devoted their lives to the building of an institution of which we may be justly proud. . . . Miss Coleman organized the department of physical education and was its head for twenty- seven years. Mr. Forney, the last surviving member of Dr. Mclver ' s original faculty, was the first treasurer and established the department of business education. Dr. Gove, head physician from 1893 to 1937, established the department of health; and Miss Jamison, long a secretary and counselor, organized the home economics department. Miss Laird, an associate professor of French, was a member of the faculty for twenty-five years. We cannot estimate the extent of their influence, for their lives have become a part of the his- tory of our college. . . . Their lasting memorials are the reflections of their personalities in our way of life here. All were respected and beloved, and will be long remembered. Their contributions have helped make Woman ' s College what it is today. . . . e m o r i a m MISS JESSIE C. ] o v e r n in e n t during Pre-School Conference remained the guides for the officers until the close of school in June. At the half-way mark of the school year, an inventory of progress was made hy these officers and further plans were laid at this check-up conference. Honor Board and Judicial Board served as policy making bodies. Through residence hall discussions, through explanations to the freshmen, and the traditional skit at the first mass meeting, the idea of responsible freedom became a part of the philosophy of each student. Legislature cooperated in a constructive way by eliminating unnecessary rules. Student Government at the Woman ' s College followed the traditional phases — legislative, judicial, and executive. President Betsy Bulluck presided over Judicial Board and mass meetings, appointed committee chairmen, and exercised all executive powers. Susan Womack as Vice-President of Student Government presided at Legislature, assisted with the handbook, and was responsible for chapel seating. To Secretary Betsy Umstead was delegated the responsibility of keeping records of Judicial Board and Hall Board cases, and taking minutes of mass meetings. Treasurer Betty Phillips managed the bud- get and was responsible for minutes of Legislature. Woman ' s College has been for us a laboratory for democratic living. The citizens of tomor- row have taken their primary courses in democratic living under the auspices of the Stu- dent Government Association.
