committees and the larger group. With the return of the natives, the plans which became actualities this year were the revision of the Service League and the rejuvenation of campus clubs. To upperclassmen, S. G. A. and its various subdi- visions are part of everyday life. The Freshmen get to know it gradually as they come in contact with hall boards, or get to know their proctors by the sound of a call down ; but Freshman Week is also helpful. At this time, the new ipso facto members of the student body are welcomed by the chief officers at a meeting in Aycock. And, later on, they are introduced to the honor policy, a comparatively new but very important phase of Wo- man ' s College campus government. From the presidency to committee memberships, S. G. A. is of, by, and for the students. The excitement of elections subsides, but the interest remains keen. Prexy AT THE Mike. First Row: M. L. Crabtree, M. Davis, A. Gillespie, B. L. Howser, A. student government association Jke =J-Jemocrati vvau — NANCY Kikby, President The most exciting part of Student Government — as far as the whole campus is concerned — is election time; the time of banners three feet high, strange parades through the dining halls, cheer- ing parties by torch-light, and frenzied mass meetings. After the shouting dies down, S. G. A. carries on in its own calm and efficient way, taking care of all matters that are not reserved in the said grant of power (see Constitution). Taking over their duties in May, in order to get the benefit of the sage advice of their predecessors, the elected officers keep things going smoothly — in their executive, legislative, and judicial functions. The Pre-School Conference in September means a reunion of the student leaders. After the thrill of seeing everyone again has been vociferously expressed, a lot of good hard work is done — plans are made for the beginning school year, through special Billie Cherry, Treasurer; Betty Styron, Secretary; Jean Dickey, Vice-Pn tident. ♦18

student government associatioi JUDICIAL BORRD State your case, please, begins Chief Justice Kirby as the defendant takes her seat facing the nine black- cloaked members of the Judicial Board. The judges wear their most becoming austere expressions — as a rule, but, occasionally, the situation has been known to develop comic tendencies, and it has been said the Judy Board has smiled! The cases are tried in the Judicial Board room of the Alumnae House. Every Monday night at 7:30 the Board meets around a long, green-topped, horse shoe table. A house president will come in and present the case of the student to be questioned. Behind closed doors the mem- bers of the Board debate each case and many times this question comes into the discussion. Was it a case of gross carelessness or was it a deliberate defiance of the honor code of the cam- pus? Each case is considered individually, and the penalties are decided on the basis of what will help to strengthen the honor of this particular person. Nancy Kirby, as president of student government, acts as chairman of the Board. Betty Styron, who is secretary of student government acts as clerk of the court. Miss Alexander with years of legal f experience to her credit sees to it that the Quality of Mercy is not strained or neglected. Carolyn Harward, Mary Moling Kirkman, Evelyn Anderson, Betty Styron, Nancy Kirby, Claire McRoberts, Mary King, Frances Bryant, Irma Siceloff, Miss Alexander. Where power lies. ♦ 20
