Present good, future good, no good — these possibilities are mingled in the crude ore which we ordinarily call work. Out of that we must smelt, if we can, the pure metal of a voca- tion fit for the spirit of man. The crude mass of ' work, ' as it exists today in mines, shops, stores, railroads, schoolrooms, and in l(itchens, contains elements that should be abolished, elements that are hard, but no harder than we need to call out the best of us, and here and there is a nugget of pure delight.
