During a year of many achievements for Charlotte College the death of J. Murrey Atkins cast a shadow of great loss. The stu- dents of Charlotte College, who have been the benificiaries of Mr. Atkins efforts would like to add their voices of accord to the following resolution. As chairman of all of its official boards, J. Murrey Atkins served as a forceful spokesman for Charlotte College from the very infancy of this institution. In 1949, as chairman of the Char- lotte Board of School Commissioners, Murrey Atkins was chiefly instrumental in securing legislation which established Char- lotte College as a part of the Charlotte City School System. He was named chairman of the Advisory Committee appointed to direct and operate the college. In 1958 he was elected chair- man of the first official Board of Trustees of the Charlotte Com- munity College System. In 1963, when Charlotte College be- came a senior, state-supported college and a new Board of Trus- tees was appointed, Murrey Atkins was again chosen as chair- man, a position which he held until his death. With the interest of the college deep in his heart, he represented its needs and its aims to the community, to the legislature, and to the Board of Higher Education. His interest, his enthusiasm, and his devotion were constantly and unsparingly dedicated to the advancement of Charlotte College. At the same time that he gave calm, wise, and effective lead- ership in the policitial and financial establishment of Char- lotte College, always foremost in his mind was the essential, high purpose of the institution. The breadth and depth of the educa- tional character with which Charlotte College is endowed, and with which it is privileged to grow, is a reflection of his wishes and the image of his dream. To him Charlotte College was always more than on idea on paper, more indeed than on expanding aggregation of buildings on land. It lived for him as people; students, faculty, and staff. His thoughts of the college were abidingly warm, personal thoughts of its people. The faculty of Charlotte College expresses its profound grat- itude not only for what he brought to fruition but also for the heritage which he has left us, a vibrant legacy of faith and work. The faculty also resolves to build well on this foundation, and to strive steadfastly toward the fulfillment of the ideals which J. Murrey Atkins held.
