Vice-President Elizabeth Ann McRorie Secretary Frank Garner Treasurer Joseph L. Pickard ...... Parliamentarian Mrs. Edyth F. Winnincham . Adviser Page Forty-six During the 1957-1958 school year at Charlotte College, the Student Council has been faced with many problems and projects. They tried in each case to conduct a thorough investigation of the problems and to arrive at a solution that would best serve the needs of the student body. They have sincerely tried to serve the students adequately. The 1957-1958 Student Council members can look back upon an interesting, exciting, success- ful year— a most enjoyable year. They co-operated with the college administration in inaugurating an orientation program for freshmen; they watched the college enrollment break all previous records; they promoted social, as well as academic, student interest. They helped to set up a more varied assembly program. Much of the success of this year ' s Student Council must be attributed to Mrs. Edyth F. Win- ningham, the faculty adviser. Her untiring efforts, her advice, encouragement, and her enthusias- tic support played an important role in the solution of the problems. Mrs. Winningham ' s pleasant smile and radiant personality added color to the monthly meetings. As the end of the school year draws near, the Student Council members wish to thank every- one for his co-operation and support. They hope you have enjoyed this year as much as they have. They hope the students will give the future leaders the same support they have given this year. Charlotte College will be proud of you. and you will be proud of your school. During the school term 1957 ' 58, the Charlotte Collegian, The Newspaper Voice of Charlotte College, attained its goal in the form of a six-page, slick paper publication, appropriately styled The New Look Col- legian. Through the enthusiasm and capa- bility of its editor, Charles Couch; business manager, Fred Collins; and in the interest and counsel of Mr. Rupert Cillett and Miss Mary Denny, who served as faculty advisers, the newspaper took a long step forward with its added size and many new articles and fea- tures, feeling the need to keep pace with the growth of the college. Among the new features, several are wor- thy of mention. Girl of the Month placed many of the campus beauties in the public eye, while The Traveling Salesman sam- pled some of the best of Bennett Cerf; the original style and poetic thoughts of Hal Kellams produced Poet ' s Corner ; Inter- view sought to give the reader an interesting glimpse into the lives of the people who held the school ' s highest elective offices; and Book Review represented the literarv in- terests of the readers and staff members bv reviewing for each issue a worthwhile book. In the true journalistic tradition, this year ' s Collegian has crusaded for the reforms th it it considered in the best interests of Charlotte College. Student parking having been some- thing of a problem, the newspaper has re- quested, urgently and repeatedly, the co- operation of the students in resolving the difficulty. And in Letters to the Editor, the students of Charlotte College have been given the opportunity to contribute their words and thoughts toward the motivation of other reforms. Because of the pains and efforts of the editor, faculty adviser, and staff, and the en- couragement of its many friends, this year ' s Collegian will fall ' into the hands of next year ' s staff with all the pride and dignity of a superior publication. £1 SOCIAL Front row: Donald L. Page Seventy-one The 1957-1958 Charlotte College basketball team was the story of a small team playing a big man ' s game— and they played it well. The Owls were shy on height and experience, but they had an abundance of team spirit and hustle. The Charlotte College Owls competed in the tough Jack Love Semi-pro league for the second consecutive year. Most teams in the Love league have several former col- lege players on their roster, giving them an edge in ex- perience. But, under the guiding hand of Coach Buddy Smith, the team developed a running offense that, along with their hustle, enabled them to compete with their larger, more experienced opponents. THE OWLS 5 7 ' 5 8 Bill Mill was the team leader in rebounding and total points, averaging approximately 18 points per game. He was followed closely by David Trull and David Drink- ard. Jack Lannin, Mickey Connell, and Leigh Winslow added a lot of strength to the Owls ' game under the back boards. The Owls ' offense was patterned to be heavily dependent on the ball-handling and accurate shooting of its guards. Leading the Collegians ' back court game were Walt Parris, Ernie Prevatte, Joe Cowhig, and Paul Kirkley. :rr rr_ T2T First row: Joe Cowhig, Butch Little. Ernie Prevattc.
