Text from Pages 1 - 360 of the 1970 volume:

DIORAMA 1970 orence, Alabama In the final analysis each of us is alone. f l v We come to FSU alone. We leave alone. What we are at the end of four years is the sum total of past experience and four years of college life. It is more than dances, parties, and football games. They play a major part. The important times are the moments spent alone. Drinking, walking, reflecting, studying, planning, and dreaming. Lonely reflection gives us time to know ourselves. Moments of reflection and quiet solitude are as brief as they are precious. Yet stu- dents find time to get away from the crowd and the classroom to retreat into them- selves whether in a deserted amphitheater or on a lonely walkway. Whenever the number replaces t h e name, whenever the pressure builds and the rooms grow small, we grow aware that the mass is so large, and each is so small, so alone. Each of us has known our own special lone- liness whether a lost ballgame, a failing grade, or even a broken date. At those times not even the most comforting words of a concerned friend can help us. Alone in our discouragement, our disap- pointment, our failure, we have a lonely sense of sadness. No matter what the results, all of us like to think we ' ve done our best. In athletics, academics, social activities, each of us wants so much to suc- ceed. If we fail, knowing that we tried can help somewhat, but always there lingers that sense of frustration and defeat which only failure can bring. - Our college experiences are a series of interweavings solitary contemplation is mingled with group activity. Soon we must leave our place of private dreams and venture back to the hurrying, sometimes impersonal crowd. ,.- ' .YA w The crowd may rejoin in a library or a classroom. The purpose may be for serious study or merely 50 min- utes of hand cramped note-taking. But always there is the rustle of pa- per, the shuffle of feet, muffled laughter the sounds of many to- gether. Each of us is so near the other. But there are times when we cannot reach out, cannot touch, cannot for a mo- ment, even care about the fact that others exist. Each feels the loneliness of his own problems, hears the silence of his own fears. We stand back, we think, we stand apart. 1 10 Surrounded by many, pressured by people, studies and life in general; we must remember that we are individuals, that each counts. Sometimes others are so painfully near, that we feel our lone- liness acutely, then we are truly apart. We go away but al- ways the crowd beck- ons that we return. ' . V We move apart only to discover that all answers cannot be found in solitude. We need each other, need the touch of hands, the relaxed light flow of pleasant conversation, the excited happy roar of the exuberant crowd. So be alone for a time, but come back, come together. 13 Spirit nothing can compare with the spirit of FSU ' s Rats and cheerleaders. No yell is too loud, no song too old, no infirmity too great, to keep enthu- siastic rats and dedicated cheerleaders from doing their best. 14 But spirit is more than victory torches, lusty cheers, and exciting games. It is a feeling which tran- scends many areas and makes ev- eryone from alumni, students, and future students take pride in FSU and in her many activities. Homecoming FSU ' s spirit is deeply rooted in tradition. Perhaps our greatest tradition is Homecom- ing. It is a time of bustling activity when drab dormitory brick is color- ful brightness; and it is a time of change when the FSU campus be- comes a land of floats, reigned over by the Queen and her court. .- 16 All week the tension builds, the excitement mounts, the work con- tinues. Then it is Homecoming Day, the culmination of weeks of plan- ning. The crisp morning air crackles with the cadence of drums and the click of marching feet as bands, floats, and cars sweep by in a blend of color and enthusiasm. Afternoon brings the big game itself, climaxed by the halftime show and the crown- ing of the Queen. For one brief day all of us truly realize that we are FSU. 17 The aftermath of the big day is reflected in various activities. For some it is the Homecoming dance with a new dress, an evening of blaring rock combined w i t h the soft and gentle, and chance to get away from the pressure, and in the midst of the crowd to be alone with someone special. I 18 i For the others the post-game celebration is more private. To them, relaxation is a quiet drink, a small party with close friends, a withdrawal from the maddening rush, and a chance to sit back and unwind from past tensions in order to face new ones. 19 A university campus is a mixture of numerous qualities and individ- uals. Everything that goes on around us touches our lives in some way, whether it be a visit by the governor or an impromptu musical performance. From president to campus cop, from lowly freshman to the chairman of the department, we each are a part of the total that is FSU. V The atmosphere of FSU ' s campus has something to please almost everyone. Modern dormitories, and a new Fine Arts Center demonstrate clearly that FSU is a school of growth, motion, and progress, while the rolling tree marked slopes lend a feeling of peace and seclusion. Florence State is a blend of the past and the future with a strong accent on the now. 21 University life is a study in con- trasts. The mass uniformity of a ROTC lineup stands in opposition to the lone individual who stands forever on the sidelines. However, ROTC membership need not signify an involvement, nor does solitary activity always indicate apathy. Di- versity is an invaluable part of any campus. 22 f I College is a time of a searching for self-identity, for a belief, for a cause. For some, this search leads to group ac- tivities and general support of the established policies. For others the search takes them away from the accepted, along paths of dissent and protest for and against those things deeply felt. 23 So we come together on FSU ' s campus. We live together, we work together, we join together to form a united student body. Within the mass we have room for challenge, diversity, and division. We welcome individuality, for this strengthens the whole. ffiHHHjHIIIII 24 Our problems and interests serve as cohesive qualities to further re- mind us our place in the macro- cosm. When we look around, when we talk to others, we further our knowledge, we expand our world. 25 We have come a long way at FSU. Individually we have grown from scared freshmen to confident se- niors. Halls are no longer so frightening, buildings no longer loom so large. Each year the process will con- tinue. Collectively we have progressed from a small nor- mal school to a growing university. We have known victory and defeat, hope and discouragement. Yet all of us find strength within ourselves to move forth to- gether. We will leave, but Florence State will endure. 26 If we learn nothing else in our college years, we learn that time is so important, yet it moves so quick- ly. During Rat Week the freshman sets out on a journey that will, in four years, transform an insecure young person into a responsible adult. His experiences will be a series of private wishes, dreams, and fears, combined with mass par- ticipation, group activities, and in- volvement with the crowd. He will grow, and as he grows so will Flor- ence State University grow. Our greatest hope is that for Florence State and each student here the journey will end well. 27 Dedication Mrs. Mauri ne Maness 28 The respect and affection that Florence State students feel for you is perhaps your greatest tribute. Your interest and concern for the university and her students is shown by your active participation on various committees, by your outstanding service as Dean of Women from 1948 to 1954, and by the simple interest you take in each student and his problems. Even those who dislike history, say that your classes are enlivened by your warm sense of humor and obvious love for the past, which to you, is far from dead. For your service, your kindness, and your ability to be more than just a teacher, we dedicate this, the 1970 Diorama, to you, Mrs. Maurine Mannes. 29 Administration and Faculty Dr. E. B. GRAHAM Director of Kilby Laboratory School 36 Art Department The Department of Art offers course work in studio, design, art history, art education, and the general arts. Now that the completion of the visual arts facilities in the new arts center is a reality, these course areas will become stronger, and it is antici- pated that definite curriculum options may be of- fered leading to preparation for graphic design, constructive design, studio (drawing, ceramics, painting, printmaking, and sculpture), and art edu- cation. Specialized studios, lecture rooms, and a workshop have been equipped to carry out these types of curricular programs. There is optimism that art history may develop into a minor curriculum of- fering. At the present, there is limited opportunity for the Shoals Community to enroll in evening art courses. It is, again, anticipated that the new facili- ties will permit an enlarged arts program during the after-dark (or Saturday) period. Last, but far from least, the Department of Art hopes to be able to in- fluence the aesthetic awareness of every student on the Florence State campus. Mr. Mort E. In addition to the basic eighteen hour program, nine hours of elective courses are offered, making a total of twenty-seven hours. The program is based directly upon the recom- mendations of the American Library Association for undergraduate professional library education. Students completing this eighteen-hour program are prepared to serve as school librarians and to fill certain professional positions in other types of libraries and to enter grad- uate library schools approved by the American Library Association, as candidates for the master ' s degree in library science in one year. Continued increase in de- mand for librarians for all types of libraries has resulted in steady increase in enrollment in this department.
