Working in close cooperation the athletic committee and the ath- letic director have built an impres- sive athletic program at Florence State. Starting in 1949 they have combined to make Florence a foot- ball power among small colleges of the south. They have constantly bettered the basketball and base- ball programs. This year they have inaugurated intercollegiate swim- ming at the college. It is significant that they have accomplished these programs without undue emphasis being placed on athletics and with- out damage being done to the aca- demic life of the college. Instrumental in their fine season was the work of H Melton and Coach Calich. These two pitchers gave Florence a very dependable mound corps. Larry Gram, the superlative short stop and Wendell Tay- lor, supplied most of the power hitting. Brewer was an excellent receiver while Bill Farris and Lucy Hunt were outstanding in their fielding chores.
