THE KHATALI . . . presented annually to the faculty member who has shown the most consistent awareness of his primary duty as a teacher of medical students. The School of Medicine graduating class takes great pride in awarding the 1970 Khatali to ERNEST R. SIMON, M.D. He was selected by the seniors from among their six outstanding nom- inees, three of whom - through no coincidence whatsoever - were involved in the hematology teaching blocks. Dr. Simon was born in Karlsruhe, Germany, and moved to this country at age 9. Raised in San Francisco, he attended theIUniversity of Califor- nia at Berkeley and received his MD. from Harvard. After an internship at Boston City and residency training at Stanford, he worked with the National Institute of Health's arthritis program. Dr. Simon spent nearly five years at the University of Wash- ington's medical school before becoming one of the first members of the UNM Department of Med- icine. His organization of hematology training has won him the respect of his colleagues and the ad- miration and gratitude of his students. Previously honored in The Khatali, with what was then known as the John Shaw Billings Award, were Drs. REGINALD FITZ i1967-68i and ROBERT SENESCU i1968-69i. We feel it a privilege to be able to add the name of Dr. ERNEST SIMON to this distinguished list.
