UTLER came to the U, N, M. from the Farm- ington High School four years ago-he is one of our few Native Sons. The first thing that Butler did to bring glory to his name was to prove himself a tennis champion. Ho was manager of the Tennis club, '16-'17, In each tournament. Butler has made a mark for him- self. lVith Hunt as his partner he won the men 's doubles in the fall of '15 and spring of '16, He was winner of the men's singles in the spring of '16, and held that honor by a final victory in the fall tournament. This book must go to press before the results of the spring tournament will be known, but we feel safe in betting on Butler. As associate business manager of this Mirage, Butler put in many hours of hard work that must not go unsung on these pages. If you think it an easy matter to get ads for a college annual, just apply for the position of associate business manager on next year's staff and see if you can 7 do as vxell as Butler did. Having this resume of his past, are you surprised that Butler expects to go into the newspaper business? That he will make good is beyond doubt, for, in spite of his curls, Butler is a real man, quiet but dependable. FER-N REEVES, Phi Kappa Phi. B. A. Las Cruces New Mexico. J Major, Biology. Minor, Education. HIS is the second time wo have seen Fern in a cap and gown. She was graduated with the Normal class of '14 from the Department of Educa- tion. Now with her B. A. she is prepared to do big things. Fern is such a quiet little somebody that you may wonder why she acquired the nickname Boss, We shall tell you. She is assistant manager of the dining hall, it is Fern who unlocks the door for the Hboarder raids. If you are not a regular boarder, but just a stray member of the bread line, she will survey the tables, place you where you least deszre to sit, and collect your quarter in a busxn-ess-like manner before you leave the hall. Remember what a cute little page Fern made in the Y. M. C. A. play last year? Her little black curls were the hit of the evening. She served her time in the Choral club in '1-1-'15, but since then she has b:en too busy for sid? issues. Minor, Spanish HIQRIQ is so much we might say about Ray, but what is the use-he speaks for himself. To make a long story short, we shall not dwell upon his Freshman year. Ray has been most active in athletics. He made the teams in basketball, baseball, and track throughout his four years. He was manager of football, '14 and '15, captain of basketball, '14 and '17, hasehall captain, '15, and captain of track, '16, In dramatics Ray made his first appearance as the Mexican cowboy, in Geing.Some, and his second as Cook, the sheriff, in The Man From Mexico. His appointment as manager of our irst s Varsity Circus proves our faith in his ability as an actor and manager. CRay confidentially told ns that the reason for his not having a part in Go Ask XYillic was the lack of stage room for his feet.j By way of not passing up anything, Ray joined the Choral elub his first two years, and then gave up singing for puhlie speaking, and went in for dehating his last two years. ' It seems a shame to have tc- mention stupid statistics concern- ing Joe, his private life is so much more interesting. Let 's see--Joe made the football team of '13, but after that he devoted his time and talents to basket- - ' J ball, and was captain of the team ot 16. Graceful went in for four years of track, too, the '15 team. Every spring he being captain of played on the Varsity baseball team. He was pres- ident of the Athletic association. of '14-'15, As president of the Student Body for the year '14-'15, Joe gave us some interesting little assembly talks, though he blushed to do it! In '14 he took up de- bating and this year he represented the. University in the debate with Cruces. We all remember .Ioe's famous lines about the purse in the Annual play of '15. In fact he made ' that he was cast for the second lead in The Man for Ray is going with Joe-anyway they are going and commerce. Then she went to Ataseadero, f'alifornia, and left the Senior elass without a secretary and treasurer, for she had held that honor. .lust as Thelma made good in her studies, she made good in everything she undertook. She did good work on the girls' basketball teams of '15 and 'l43. The same two years she held cabinet positions in the Y, XV. F. A. In the .Tnnior play Thelma was the typieal eollege girl, and between aets she made the hit of the evening with her Irish folk dance. As l'ierette in Go .Xsk ll'illie She was one Of the earnival eiew. 'l'hehua will probably spend the summer in Cali- fornia. She is a candidate for scholarship at both Berkeley and Illinois State and expects to do post- graduate work at one of the two Universities next year.
