The most important task of a state university such as the University of Nevada in these days is to grow— to grow in strength and resources to meet the needs of an expanding student popula- tion, to provide the kinds of educational programs which will enable its graduates to undertake suc- cessfully the challenge of today ' s and tomorrow ' s world, to advance the cause of human knowl- edge and human betterment ' through research, basic and applied— in sum, to play its full and proper part, in the truest sense of a university, as an intellectual, scientific, and cultural resource for all the people of the state. To those of you who graduate this year and move on to your next chosen fields of endeavor, we express the sincere hope that your years with us have been meaningful and significant years of growth and that your education here will be of increasing value to you in the days ahead. We wish you the best of success in all your undertakings. For those of you who will continue your educa- tion at the University, we hope that you will share with us in ever greater measure the sense of community and purpose within the University, which is based upon the conviction that our growth in the future must be not merely material, but above all, one devoted to the pursuit of ex- cellence in all its forms as appropriate to a university. As we work together in this spirit, we can find our best assurance that the University will grow as it should, in strength and determination to meet successfully the manifold responsibilities of our challenging future.
