Honorable Grant Sawyer GOVERNOR STATE OF NEVADA I welcome this opportunity to send greetings to my friends on the faculty and to the students at the University of Nevada. This has been a period of new growth, new enthusiasm, a new emphasis. This change is reflected in our only institution of higher learning. We are witnessing significant changes— the addi- tion of handsome, well-equipped buildings, a healthy increase in faculty and in student enrollment, and most important, a new enthusiasm for learning. The fine new buildings are tangible evidence of this fresh vigor and zeal. They are symbols of the growing respect for scholarship at the University which is certain to bring it greater eminence than ever in its eighty-seven year history. You students now studying at the University of Nevada are fortunate indeed for never has there been an atmosphere so con- ducive to learning as today. For our nation ' s sake, I am glad this is so. Threats from abroad have not diminished and will not diminish. We are engaged not only in a race for military supremacy, but in a contest for the mind of man, a contest whose outcome will be felt in every corner of the globe. This battle of ideas and ideals is being fought through books and will be won only by serious study and scholarly attain- ment. Knowing this you must be more determined than any generation which has come before to study— to increase your knowledge of the liberal arts on which our democratic concepts are founded and of the sciences which will increasingly shape our destiny. I have great faith in you young people at the University. I know that you are fully aware of the responsibility that is yours as students, and I am very proud of you for accepting the challenge seriously and confidently. My warmest congratulations to those of you who will be graduating this year, and my best wishes to you undergraduates for continued successes! yi i ' y (XoLyf Governor of Nevada 14
