Youth confronts varied attitudes Every human being is a unique individual with his own ideals, values and goals. In our lifetime, we confront thousands of individuals. Many of these individuals have common interests with us but many have completely different attitudes and outlooks than ours. Most of our life is spent trying to work with and get along with all of these types of individuals. If we fail, as many do, racial strife, com- munication gaps, and even wars result. It is hard to understand everyone, and not necessary to agree with them, but through consideration we can learn to get along and work with one another. By learning to put ourselves in the other person’s shoes and looking at the world from his point of view, we will understand why he is what he is and won’t be so anxious to criticize him. Everyone admits that he has faults, but so often they appear minor in his eyes when he compares them with someone else’s. He must remem- ber that he is imperfect and be careful before he judges someone else. By learning to accept one another for what they really are and not for the length of their hair or for the clothes that they wear, the world will be a better place and each individual will be appreciated for his own unique self. —Joe South 25
