CALVIN T. RYAN LIBRARY KEARNEY STATE COLLEGE KEARNEY, NEBRASKA Blue and Gold Rex McGinnis, Editor Lloyd Softley, Business Manager Leona Mae Failor, Faculty Advisor NEBRASKA STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE Kearney, Nebraska IN MEMORIAM Joseph L. Bowes To the campus of the Nebraska State Teachers College in 1947 there came a modest and unassuming Assistant Professor of Education. A gradu- ate of the University of Nebraska, he had already made a distinguished record as a Superintendent of City Schools at Adams and Franklin, Ne- braska where his memory was and is cherished by hundreds of graduates who had been privileged to count him as friend and counselor As a member of the staff in the Education Division at Nebraska State he taught and became well acquainted with every student who planned to enter the teaching profession. His philosophy was one of quiet, earnest and sincere devotion to the cause of education and to the students whose interests were close to his heart. As he had lived quietly, he quietly slipped away, his memory beloved by administrators, faculty and students alike. His faithfulness to the cause he had elected to serve shall ever stand as an inspiration to those who knew and loved him. Page Herbert L. The edition of the 1954 Blue and Gold brought about many changes and problems. Economizing the book has been cut to 165 pages this year. Informal shots of Sophomores and Juniors were introduced and more space was devoted to athletics. There were moments of encouragement, disappointment, and anxiety as the book became a living record of the past year's events. In spite of these trials and tribulations there is a great feeling of satis- faction as the book is completed. We sincerely hope you enjoy the 1954 Blue and Gold. STUDENT COUNCIL The weekly Monday meetings of the Student Council are held in the Blue and Gold Room of the Student Union with President Don Welch pre- siding. Along with the honor of being a Council member goes a great re- sponsibility. They try to solve the various problems that arise on the campus for the benefit of all students. The Student Council is responsible for such activities as Homecoming, the all-college dance, Friday nite juke-box dances, pep rallies, Broncho Days, and other entertainment. Each Council member also serves on a faculty committee. Dr. Leona Mae Failor and Mr. Harvey Cole are faculty sponsors of the Student Council. Elected to head the Council next year will be Roger Dahlin as president and Mary Alexander, vice-president. Page 5S Officers and faculty sponsors discuss plans for the all-college dance. INTER-FRATERNITY-SORORITY COUNCIL Controlling and regulating the activities of the social fraternities and sororities on the campus is the purpose of the Inter-Froternity- Sorority Council. Interested in developing and understanding among the organizations this year's council tried a new approach to Rush Week. A period of silence was ex- tended over a period of two days. Violators were to be punished by the Council. No vio- lations were reported and rush and preference week went smoothly. Council members began a revision of the Inter-Fraternity-Sorority Council Constitution. Meetings were calendared for two times a month rather than the previous one meeting a month. The year saw Mrs. Phyllis Camp- bell Aspen leave as a sponsor. Each year the Council awards a plaque to the fraternity or sorority having the highest scholastic average. Page 77 DELTA PI BETA The new attractive white uniforms worn by the Deltas this year, for the first time, were one of the outstanding features of the soror- ity. The Delta year had a terrific start as they had their onnual Homecoming Brunch at El- liott's Tea Room and were recognized in the parade by winning second place with their float, Oh You Beautiful Doll. Two of the Homecoming Queen Attendants were mem- bers of the Delta Pi Beta Sorority, Anne Christ- ensen and Beverly Brown. The climax of the year was the annual Delta Holly Ball which was attended by two hundred and fifty guests. The main event of the evening was the crowning of Mrs. Janet Atwater Bachman by Margaret McClure as Holly Queen during intermission. The Delta Pi Beta Sorority gained prestige during pledge season as 25 efficient girls chose Delta Pi Beta as their sorority. The Hour Dance given at the Student Union by the Deltas was a great success due to a skit, Ye Old Tavern which they presented. Sharon Glenn, Ardyce Carroll, and Robin Croissant were elected to the Student Coun- cil for the 1954 and 1955 term. Hats off to the Delta Pi Beta Sorority for a most successful year. Seated. SIGMA THETA PHI The pink and white of the Sigma Theta Phi Sorority had a successful and memorable year by continuing to do its part in leadership and achievement. Homecoming was the first big event. A brunch, held by the alumni, preceded the afternoon football game and coronation of the Homecoming Queen. The Sigma Campus display was chosen as the third place winner. Miss Darlene Jorgensen was crowned Home- coming Queen of 1954, The Student Union was transformed into a western settlement for the annual ''Ranch Dance. The Sigma Sweetheart was crowned, and twenty-nine girls chose the Sigma's as their sorority. Sigmagrams were sold at the Mardi Gras celebration. The Mardi Gras Queen was Janet Mitchell. A very clever return porty, carrying out the Civil War theme, was given by the pledges. Jane Anderson was elected to the Student Council. The Butterfly Ball and Mother's Day Tea brought to a close a very busy and prosper- ous year. Page 80 Row 1. Beginning the year's social functions was a picnic, an ann_al affair. At Homecoming the sorority members held a banquet for re- turning alumni, and entered a float, Smiles in the Homecoming Parade. At the annual Cinderella Ball, Miss Jean Toole, now Mrs. Loren Howe, was named Cinderella of 1954. Rush dinners and preferencing followed. At formal initiation 19 girls became active members of the organ- ization At the Mardi Gras, the sorority sponsored a balloon bust. The Zeto Chatter was a semester publication of the organization. A spring dance and Mother-Daughter Tea, ond slumber party concluded the year's social ac- tivities. Possessors of the sorority scholarship plaque, having won it three times in a row, the girls took priae in displaying it in their rooms. Page $2 Pew 1. Also spotlighting the Caledonian year was the crowning of Beverly Brown as Caledonian Sweetheart for 1953, and the awarding of life- time honorary memberships to Dr Leo Thomas, Dean of Instruction, and Mr Chuck Eosenmann, Kearney Hub Staff member. The Caledonian Fraternity welcomed 31 pledges at the preference dinner which was held at Grandpa's Steak House. Miss Sherry Johnson was crowned Phi Tau Sweetheart at the first semester pre-rush dance at the Fort Kearney Hotel. Forty-one pledges attended the preference dinner at the Plane View Steak House and were later wel- comed as active members into the oldest fraternity on the campus.
