Nebraska Is.. the State From our corn-producing plains broken by bluffs — the State of agriculture. From our ever-expanding towns and cities — the State of industries, trade and commerce. From the rolling range and hay meadows of our ranch land in the Sandhills — the Beef State. 1

V The 1957 CORNHUSKER is a reflection of pride in the Uni- versity and the State, of pride in the citizens who build Nebraska. The University is obligated to provide an educational and social opportunity for the future citizens of the State. How it meets this responsibility is the concern of every student and tax- payer. The student, in turn, has an obligation to the University and the State to acquire the vast amount of cultural and technical knowledge available at NU. The effect this University has on the students is of interest to every citizen. As we recorded the events of the year, the CORNHUSKER staff stopped to consider the contributions our University makes. We found them to range from research that will affect the wel- fare of the whole United States to counseling services that give an indifferent student a purpose. Too often students and citizens alike take such contribu- tions for granted and are ready to criticize the School. Too often 1he University and the citizens misinterpret the actions and in- tentions of the students. We observed and were proud. We chal- lenge you to do the same. ■- rL.a6a JvT i -i Zh,i 10
