TI-IE LINGUIST TO OUR CHINESE TEACHERS THE LINGUIST IS GRATEFULLY DEDICATED BY The sroaohf Body ofthe Nanking Language School 1922-23 He who comes to China to labor among the Chinese finds himself, at first, helpless as an infant. Every'door of communication with the millions he seeks to help is shut. But it is our teachers who are opening these doors for us and are patiently making intelligible those amazing strings of rapid fire sounds. They deserve our undying gratitude. With good reason then, do we dedicate this account of our first year's ex- perience and observation in China to our Chinese teachers. Our teachers have not only given us an introduction to the language, great as that task is, but they have also introduced us to the mind and heart of China. In them is personified the courtesy, kindness and good fellowship which are characteristic of the nation. They are living examples of infinite patience. Their ability as teachers has given us an insight into the wonder- ful capacity of the Chinese people. We are happy to count them as personal friends, and to convey to them this mark of our high esteem and gratitude.
