In Memorium: Roy Evenson With sorrow, the CHINOOK staff dedicates the 1984 CHINOOK to Roy Evenson. Roy was a good friend to Western. leaving, at his death last spring, his considerable estate to the college. A 1948 graduate. Roy renewed his campus contacts just a few years ago after his retirement from the National Park Service. A longstanding disability did not dampen his spirits nor curtail his activities. His interest in young people is now commemorated in the many scholarships in his name. The CHINOOK is especially honored by his generosity. The extra color pages in this edition are possible because of an Evenson grant. The editor receives an Evenson scholarship as does a campus photographer, who is responsible for many CHINOOK pictures. Roy's interest in the book stemmed from his work on it during his college days. Roy enjoyed returning to the campus at graduation time when Associates of the WMC Foundation meet. Below he greets Capt. James Lovell, former astronaut, who was the 1983 commencement speaker. Western's students for many generations to come will be the beneficiaries of Roy's interest in young people. We will miss him. but we are glad he passed our way and stopped at Western, both as a student and as a friend and benefactor.
