School of Dentistry ' l Office of the Dean UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI - KANSAS CITY 650 East 25th Street Kansas Clty, Missourl 64108 Telephone: 03165 221-3500 The Bushwacker had a long tradition from Volume 1 in 1920 Qfollowing The Molar D until 1946. From 1947 until 1967 the School of Dentistry was represented to varying de- grees in the general yearbook of the University of Kansas City and the University of Missouri-Kansas City, the Kangaroos. In 1968 student interest in a UMKC yearbook died and has never been revived. At the School of Dentistry the Bushwacker was reestablished in 1970. The yearbooks give a permanent and vital record of the school which cannot be gleaned from the student records and annual school catalogs. Looking back over the Kangaroos from 1958 when I joined the faculty until 1967 and the 1970-74 fand hopefully 19755 Bushwackers is to see the changes and the advances of almost two decades. The lost years C1968-19695 leave an irreplaceable gap. Unfortunately, as students many of us never appreciated the yearbook concept but these records are among the most fre- quently used books in the Dean's Office. Almost daily a graduate writes back for a ref- erence to be used for admission to graduate school or appointment to a hospital staff or an organization writes for information Knot G. P. A. or class standingb on an alumnus who has been nominated for some honor or position of responsibility. In the yearbooks these individuals are more than just names but active men and women who contributed to the milieu that was their dental school. I for one hope that the tradition does not succumb again to apathy. The class of 1975 will be the class leaving UMKC with me. There have been many changes since I came to this school in 1958. Most alumni look on the new building as the most obvious improvement of the past decade but it was already here when you entered. I look on getting out of the lock-step program that made dental school a cross between a monastery and a military academy as being more important. You take for granted the selective enrichment, comprehensive dentistry, student involvement in governance and committee work, the biomedical communications system, utilization of auxiliaries, extramural experiences and early graduation. To generations of dentists before you these were unknown and still are in many schools that base graduation on the number of points earned for clinical procedures. As we leave UMKC let us remember that others will follow and that without con- tinuing progress the school will be regressing.
