i r.r.e!L:l !Iu-rg.:-f-,'-sf.........I,, -,... I ai ia PROFESSIONAL SERVICES E WHO has selected a profession as his vocation has offered his life s work for others. It is true that the laborer is worthy of his hire but first in the mind of a true professional man or woman are the ideals of a com petent, honest, and enthusiastic service. Striving to please may be in a sense a crowning grace, but if it is not backed by intelligence, sincerity, and self abrogation it is as empty as the beat ing of a bass drum without the leading instruments in operation. We have known men who have made a supreme effort on the surface to please but to those who knew the facts, their services were actually damaging and deadly instead of beneficial. The fatal period in many lives is during the time of preparation The temptation to idle, to trade industry for pleasure, to attempt to fool those who are trying to help, or to use a common phrase to get byf, is much too prevalent. Regret, remorse, fear, and resentment always come later to canker such a neglectful and stupid person. A cultured manner is essential, but true culture is from the heart One may smile, bow, be attentive, and polite, and yet be a villain. Culture is nat urally acquired in the persistent and sincere application to the thing one has set out to do. The same endeavor that builds ability and culture builds char acter, the final, lasting and influential quality that awards success. There is nothing new or original in these simple admonitions, but like the repetition of the technic of our tasks it finally becomes a part of our being. The immortal structure pursuant to a true professional career is summed up by Shakespeare who sounded the depths of nature in these words This above all. To thine own self be true, And it must follow as the night the day, ' Thou cans't not be false to any man. ix- R. . RI M fx, I NEHART X l W M - My i m, l ye , M1 N L, ,V i i xi lfiixili it A'Q,. 1, . EDWARDS' record as superintendent of the infirmary speaks for . itself. He has the unusual ability of being able to shoulder the responsi- bilities that constantly arise, to make the proper corrections and still retain the friendship and respect of the students. In addition to these qualities Dr. Edwards can always be counted upon to assist the student with any phase of dentistry with which he may be hav- ing trouble, whether it be theory or operative. Although an exacting instruc- tor, he is a fair one, and a friend to each and everyone. K ' f. V: ff! ir' .
