Today if has sevenfeen buildings, an overall faculfy of approximafely 250, an annual sfudenl' body of around 4,000, and an ever-grow- ing supporf of +he communify. EVEN TO 'rhe seven original members sfill serving on 'l'he Board of Trusiees, fo 'I'he facul'ry and alumni PRCJGRESS of The early years, and +0 lhe 'iirsl' benefaciors and friends who helped +o launch fhe Universily, our achievemenis over 'I'hese fleefing years musi' seem impressive. MORTVEDT came fo KCU in 1943 as Dean of fhe Liberal Arfs College and in 1947 he assumed his presenl dufies as vice-presidenf. BUT WE have sel our sighfs even higher. Decker's efforfs are confinually direcfed. Aufhor, speaker, civic leader and world lraveler, as well as educafor, Dr. Decker only recenfly has added fo his dis- finguished career by serving lasf year as Assislanf Direcfor of fhe Mufual Securify Agency of fhe Ear Easf. On sab- bafical leave from his posf as presidenf of lhe Universify, he was responsible for adminisfering American aid pro- grams in six Ear Easf counfries. BORN in Sioux Cify, lowa, December, 19, 1904, Dr. Decker, early in his educalion, showed high qualifies of scholarship and leadership. ln 1925 he received his BA. degree from Carlefon College, Norfhfield, Minnesofa, and af fhe age of only 23, he received his Ph.D. degree in comparalive liferafure from lhe Universify of Chicago. DR. DECKER joined fhe faculfy of fhe Universify of Kansas Cily in 1934 as chairman of lhe English deparfmenf and in 1937 he was appoinfed vice-presidenl. The following year, af fhe age of 33, he was named presidenl. Since lhaf fime, Dr. Decker has been fhe guiding force in fhe Universify's greaf program of expansion and improvemenl. 9
