USA Today: Oxford s tops Oxford one of six top college towns in America with the release of Heart of Dixie. Ole Miss and Oxford have had their share of publicity recently, but the public eye viewed the area once more In the September 1 , 1 989 Issue of USA Today. Oxford appeared In a feature naming, six top college towns In America. Writer EJonnle Jacob said the university Is mentioned In the article because of Its research concerning black cultural aspects of the South, an aspect out of line with the historical Image the country has of Ole Miss. Her article features the blues archive ancf some of the cultural aspects of Mississippi preserved by the university. Ron Schoolmeester. editor of travel, said USA Today staff Inquired nationwide about favorite college towns and Oxford was mentioned In the survey. Each entry was discussed, resulting In the staff ' s choice of Oxford as one of six top college towns In a list that excludes metropolitan areas such as Boston. Others featured are Princeton, N.J.. and Princeton Unl- .rerslly: Wllllamstown. Maine, and Williams College: Bloo- mlnglon. Ind.. and Indiana University; Kempc. Ariz., and Arizona State University: Charlottlesvllle. Va.. and the Uni- versity of Virginia.
