;mher 5, 1971 ?ar Mom p-ot down here late yesterday afternoon and have checked into mv room successfully. I know your surprised I ' ve navigated this far without a major mishap, but it looks as though T ' ve been v ell trained. Mv room is East Towers 215. I can ' t describe how great looking the camnus is, after or.lv one visit T had forgotten how much of Mother fj atnre is still evident. The trees show no sipns of autumn, and although the weather is a little warm, it is verv comfortable, since I do have air condi- tioning in my (fform. The canrous isn ' t too binr, of course, but it ' s laid out well so that at any time you can be fairly close to epen scaces - for example there ' s a huge grove, and another smaller area like it, and a lot of woods and all so you can get awa r from all the nice brick buildings when vou feel like you want to. I will be glad when fall does arrive, I ' ll bet it looks even better. My rommate (or is it ' roomate ' ?) seems to be a pretty nice pruy. His name is Tad Lawrence and he ' s from Meadvi lie, Mississippi which is but then T pruess everybody is T got here before he did and somewhere. He ' s a little bit different, to some extent. He ' s friendly at least, had all my things moved in when he arrived. The first thing he did was to sit down and get a bottle of bourbon out of his suitcase and hide it and about three more under hi? bed. Never fear, Mother, I wouldn ' t touch a drop of the stuff (Heaven forbid, it ' s against t h e rule s!). He seeme d verv pleased with himself - he feels like he ' s getting away with something, this is his form of protest, I suppose. I can see some late night trips to the ,john with him sroune:. Just call me Florence. He sys 100% of the students un here drink, i not moor (i ' rett witty, isn ' t he?) IT ' s not that they drink that much, bu 4 - they anticipate it so eage-ly that that it doesn ' t take much to get them drunk since they ' re already half-hi h before they start .lust on the snirit of the thinr. The guy, his rirl, the game -:nd the bottle - v hoopeeee! Mv roommate has already told me three times to pret started fretting a date for the game three weeks the real dogs have already been skked to certainly a large proportion of erood loo UP here. from now. Apparently all but the first two. There is :-. inpr t l rrre proportioned pirl a place called Kiame a real but it roller what I rush starts My P.O. box alace. The food was tasty After 1 that we went to the was better than playing the pin skating. Oxford may turn out to to say the least, but sh ow wni c h wa sn ' t pt ei 11 machines, too -li -, or be a tad dull, if you know I ' m not her e to have a ?ood time, am I? veil, earlv, so I better qa ' it. (September 17)... I ' m glad rush is finally over. At first I enjoyed meeting all of the people, but as the week wore on I began to fade. My hand hurt from all of the handshakes, the names ran by me unheard, and I got tired of all the sincere inter- est from all the ' frat cats ' . The water turned into punch by the second party, and by the third I was being walked around with someone ' s hand on my back, a coke in one hand, and with smooth words flowing into ay weary ear. I was told ten times that this was the most important decision of my life. All of the people here are really ' sharp ' dressers. I think that the boys are more fashion conscious than the girls. The ' in thing now is to be fashion- ably hippie. Hair should be over ears and colar but not too long; wire-rims are a Bust; moust- aches are good but beards are a little too muchj sandals or hushpuppies do for shoes. In order to be with it you have to have a bike and knapsack on your back. I ' m not sure, but some say that some carry an unwarranted weed in the knapsacks. Nasty knapsacks. Concerning the ' weed ' , it seems that even some of our fin, genteel Southern belles are smoking the stuff. And all in the privacy of their ante-bellum sorority houses. I ' m sure they are reveling in their new-found freedom.
