He came To Greenville, Mississippi, High School in T924 and was made superinTendenT oT schools There in I933. Aller lhis he sludied lor his MD. Dr. Panlrralz came lo Ole Miss as assislanl dean ol lhe School ol Medicine in I945. The lollowing year he was made dean. ln lhe pasl year lhe medical school alone received a lolal ol 330.000 lor research granls, more lhan il has ever received in ils hislory. Mosl ol lhe medical slall are now engaged in aclive research. Under lhe oresenl acceleraled program, in which lhe slu- denl linishes lhe lwosyear course in one and one-hall years. 50 persons are gradualed each year. The lirsl gradualing class, in l905, when lhe school was lwo years old, numbered only six. Four-year medical inslruclion will be ollered sludenls in lhe slale as soon as legislalive approprialions are voled lor con- slruclion ol lacililies. ll E ELMER LIONEL HAMMOND has seen lhe enrollmenl ol lhe School ol Pharmacy lump from 60 sludenls when he came here in l928 lo 300 al lhe presenl lime. l-le received his pharmacy degree from lhe Universily ol Michigan in l92l. As a high school sludenl in Chicago he lirsl became inleresled in lhe profession when he worlced al a drug slore aller classes. l-le received his MS degree lrom lhe Uni- versily ol Michigan in l923. From l92I unlil l928 he laughl pharmacy al Wesl Virginia Universily. Dean l-lammond was a graduale sludenl al lhe Universily ol Chicago in l927-29, and during lhis lime he was made dean ol lhe Ole Miss pharmacy school, l-le received his PhD in l94l lrom lhe Universily ol Wisconsin. l-le boasls lhal his school is one ol lhe linesl in lhe Soulh, and he is especially lond ol lhe chemislry and pharmacy build- ing, lhe enlire lhird lloor ol which houses lhe school. ll is a lar cry, he recalls, lrom lhe lhree small laboralories which sup- plemenled lhe leclure rooms when lhe school was lirsl eslab- lished in July I908. Filleen sludenls applied lor admission lhen. There have been 537 graduales lrom lhe school since lhal day. and wilh an annual enrollmenl ol 300, lhe lolal num- ber ol graduales can possibly double in lhe nexl len years.
