Welcome Week PRESIDENT MORRILL is being presented with a birlhdoy coko and scroll during o planned Welcome week tribute. CLOUD CHAMBER operation gels the undivided attention of these two potential scientists os instructor explains. FATIGUED FRESHMAN ponders Welcome wcok festivities and his scholastic potential for future classos at the University. milking contest and a greased pig, ending with the September supper, a songfest and the Blue Jean ball. You were beginning to get tired so between the planned events you got into the coffee break habit. There was time to renew old friendships from high school, but more important you made new friends who looked forward with you to the new experiences you would have at the University, Welcome week was helping you prepare together for this new world. Your week ended with a Welcome week banquet and a dream dance, the Welcome Whirl. In a way you were glad to see the end of the week because after so much activity you were tired, and a dreamy dance was the perfect ending. It had been so much fun that you were sorry to see it go, too. Then you looked ahead because the end of Welcome week meant the beginning of classes, and that's what all this planning had been for.

Welcome Week JOANNE KORTE wo crowned Freshman Queen oi the climax of Welcome Week. Si ill tired from Freshman caui|), you rush into Welcome week, which is crammed full of more things than you can possibly do. There is a constant round of meetings, discussions and classroom previews which, you have been told, have a new emphasis to help you broaden your intellectual and cultural outlook. Other years students commented the programs were too long and frivolous. Over the past several years I he emphasis has been shifting more toward learning about the I'niversity, instead of merely giving the student a good time. Your discussion groups were designed to answer questions like How will your |K rsonal values change at school?” and What opportunities does the I’nivcr-sity afford students to develop a questioning mind?” You learned to ask more questions aland the I’ni-versity than you had even thought of before. In spite of the new intellectual emphasis and the planning, students found time for just having fun. During one Welcome week day on St. Paul campus there was a PARTHENON BALL, o Greek-sponsored octivily during Welcome week, colls for hilority in gome ond costume.
