Who—moved into I'niversily village with their families heeau.se they could not afford to finish their education any other way. Who—chased a girl until she finally caught him. Who—loved being creative, and fell professional in the Shevlin arena spotlight. Who—-went greck and haunted fraternity row. Who—planned a military career, and snapped to march music. Who—desired to he alone, and found solace in the anonymity of a I'nion crowd. Your third year at the I diversity— With two academic packed years behind, and two ahead, you fell trapped in a vacuum. With a summer of job experience in your major field, you believed von could lick the world without two more years of college. Willi the guiding confidence of an op-per-classman, you learned to accept the trapped feeling. With tin end of spring quarter, you sighed in relief. One more year of professional education—you were obsessed with the idea of a diploma. In your senior year . . . You were aware of the ever pensive graduate student. You marveled at the self-reliance of foreign students thriving in your surroundings. You knew you would graduate—you couldn't come this far and not graduate. You strode into Memorial stadium with a feeling of possession. You graduated with high ideals. 8 DRAFT EXEMPTION for four yeors sounds good bul ROTC men hove to work for every minute of their freedom and then •.pend several years of duly oflcrwords. Twenty-five thousand students and you. You feigned calmness when you registered at the expansive I'niversity of Minnesota, hut you were scared. You felt high schoolish during orientation. hut you needed the group to get your bearings on campus. You laughed at the .Minnesota Multi-phasic test, hut you were scared—out of the thousands you would he pegged. SATURDAY'S HEROES ore often jolt thot. Bui often loo, they oro men with high goal-., tcholoitically ond profeitionally BROADWAY TALENT often ipringi from the stage of Scott or the SHevlin theatre. Experience is port of o college degree. You knew you had friends on campus, hut you envied the clusters of knowing students. You disguised wayward glances from the registration form to door numbers in Folwell the first day of classes. You wen irked at the worldly, intellectual sounding st udents in your class, hut you craved their self assurance. You flunked your first theme, but you knew you had writing ability. You received a C in your first mid-quarter, but you improved with a B in the final. You returned to the I'niversity a second year, hut did you really belong?
