THE University is a pattern of buildings and people. The buildings cover many acres on the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi. Student names (ill most of the 226 pages in the six-by-nine inch student address book. It's easy to see how the individual feels squeezed out. He becomes an IBM card in the Ad building. A pip on a class grade curve. Sometimes be may transcend bis place in the pattern. Ami bis words can be seen quoted in the Daily or bis name painted on an election poster. Only after finding a niche in a smaller group does he have a sense of belonging. Then lie’s “in the Theater, ' or “on the Tech Commission.’ There’s less feeling of being one part in 17,000. In time lie might come to be president of bis group and a campus leader. But even campus leaders aren't really well known at Minnesota. Underlying most everything at the University is this feeling of vastness contrasted with bis smallness. To some extent it's caused by surrounding Minneapolis and St. Paul. And apathy is rationalized by the statistic that 60 per cent of the Minnesota enrollment lives at home. But sometimes be wonders if the apatli conies more from a shell built out of smallness, perhaps of loneliness, and the feeling of being diluted one to 17,000. For this reason the 53 Gopher is dedicated to all tin faces we've passed on the Mall. Page 9
