THE CONGRESSIONAL OFFICE is the contor ot activity as tho whools ol congress aro set into motion. Recognition day, brainchild of the Congress, had its second successful year. Sam Morehcad commanded the dinner and dance committees for the evening party. Over 100 of the year’s honor students and outstanding activities people were recognized at this time. Duke I'llington and Sigmund Romberg were brought to the campus by Congress. Alike Cashman and his crew conducted a students’ preference poll for bands and set an example for other groups. Conducted on a non-profit basis, the few dollars earned were turned over to the Campus Chest. The scope of the Congress is much wider than the University however. A new project this year under bob Hcdore’s direction was that of bringing six German students to the campus. The Congress arranged for their housing and introduced them to all phases of American University life. P«g« 19

Congress, the pulse hear of the University, managed, arranged for and operated most social and business functions of the University. I he new Freshman I landbook was published by the Congress in conjunction with Dean Williamson’s office. The booklet now has more information arranged in an informal way. Congress gave a boost to the Kootcr Club and organized the lirsr student cheering section at the University. Library lighting got the once over. Jerry Schulkin and his committee arranged for more lights. At the same time, with the cooperation of the library staff, it planned more effective ways of dispensing books from the library. Additional facilities for the commuters’ lunchroom, streetcar rates and football searing were problems investigated by the Congress, represented by Liken Seablom, during the year. Page 18

Senior Cabinet Many new events were added to the seniors' calendar this year. Under the cabinet’s direction a Senior Week, senior coffee hours, a senior dinner in March, and a cauldron ceremony for the fall and winter graduates were added to the year's program. Senior Week, May 15-20, highlighted the academic year for the class of ’50. Chairman Charlotte Rclf coordinated the many social and recognition activities. I he Senior Prom. Cap and Gown Day, a senior picnic and a faculty-senior coffee hour made it a full week blithe 3000 graduating seniors. I lie Senior Prom was held at the Radisson I lotcl on May 20 under the chairmanship of Larry Dovle. I he sale of graduation announcements for the three quarters came under the direction of Bud k illing. The class of '50 memorial was given to the Greater University Fund earmarked for freshman scholarships. PREXY George Thl s give hit hard working crew a lew urgent alignment . MARILYN McGARRY whip out argyle while Ihe Senior Cabinet gab a bit. Sophomore Cabinet The Sophomore Cabinet really got a kick out of this year's major activity. For one solid week they sent out l Capp's Kigmics. I he Polio Bug was kicked so hard that the Cabinet-sponsored March of Dimes drive broke all collection records. Contacts were made within the Inter-Residence, Inter-Fraternity, and Pan-1 lei councils. To get additional donations, a contest to name the inter-campus trolley was held. I he winning name was Miss-It. Winter quarter kept the members busy completing an organization filing system which is available to all students. Complete membership of every activity on campus is in that little file. Coffee hours were conducted by the members during the year to acquaint all students with the various activities on campus and show them whar they do. and how to participate.
